Food is the Best Medicine

Food, and especially fruits and vegetables, is the best medicine available to human beings.

One of the most memorable phrases Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician, once uttered was: “Let food be your medicine and medicine be your food.” This ensemble of food and medicine looks appealing. Another more down-to-earth combination is that of fruits and vegetables. In ancient periods up until today, people have known different kinds of food, but for most of the time their knowledge about a food’s properties has been limited to its name.

Now, people are getting to know the utility of food they find available. We, as human beings, need to realize the ways food, and more importantly which food, can be used or have the effect of a medicine. Food, as a matter of fact, is a primordial prerequisite for humans’ health and the maintenance of healthy lifestyles.

Fruits and vegetables are rich in vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates and proteins. There are some fruits with high sugar concentration, like oranges, bananas and prunes, but they are not hazardous to our health. Overall, fruits and vegetables are anything but dangerous to humans.

In the past, many civilizations survived thanks to wild plants. People ate raw fruits and vegetables, thus acquiring and absorbing vitamins their bodies needed. They used food plants sustainably, and consequently nature through its plants supported life and good health. Some would be surprised to read that fruits and vegetables are the most important foods for humans.

Nature and almost everything it offers can be the best doctor and medicine out there. People need to get to know what they are offered and how it can make them healthier.

Many think meat is the most important food and all the rest is extra. They are wrong. Sometimes, meat is not healthy because it can cause hygienic problems and may lead to diseases in humans. Research suggests that eating a lot of meat, especially red meat, may contribute to to bowel cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, bone problems, arthritis, high cholesterol, food poisoning, and breast cancer.

Instead, fruits and vegetables are a better choice, even if they are not tastier than meat. Fruits and vegetables contain chlorophyll, full of solar energy. This valuable energy passes to humans through plants. Minerals are also essential to human metabolism and they are easily digested and assimilated by the cells. Vegetables contain another important unit, cellulose, which eases digestion and cleans the body.

Johann Gottfried von Herder once said that people who eat vegetation are likely to have calm nerves, a balanced soul and good health. Indeed, many ancient philosophers urged people to consume more and more natural food such as fruits and vegetables. Aristoxenus, an ancient Greek philosopher, called salad the “green Easter cake.”

Years ago, people did not know about diets and vitamins but they saw and experienced the positive effects and energy that fruits and vegetables gave them.

Do not get ill and then start to look for remedies and doctors, but instead try to realize the utility of food.
