About Acai Berries and What They’re Used For
Acai berries have recently burst onto the scene claiming to do a whole lot of good for the health of people. Are there actual benefits to drinking acai fruit juice?
Since the beginning of the acai berry craze, marketers have been promising that these berries help with anti-aging and weight loss; but are the clams being made actually true?
Health Properties of Acai Berries
It’s no question that acai berries provide a number of health benefits, but that is true of all of the other fruits out there as well. One thing that sets acai berries apart from most of the other fruits is their antioxidant content. According to WebMD, “Some studies show that acai fruit pulp has a very high antioxidant capacity with even more antioxidant content than cranberry, raspberry, blackberry, strawberry, or blueberry. Studies are ongoing, though, and the jury is still out.”
If this were proven to be true, then it may be safe to say that the antioxidants in acai berries could help heart disease and cancer prevention. This is because antioxidants work to prevent damage to cells in the body and enough damaged cells could lead to cancer and other serious health conditions. Antioxidants are the body’s defense system against free radicals. When free radicals react with DNA or cell membranes, this can cause the cells to function at a lower level or even cause them to die.
It may be a bit of a stretch to go ahead and say that acai berries can help with weight loss, though. That would basically be saying that eating blackberries, cranberries or blueberries can help one lose weight, when in reality it’s the combination of eating healthy and exercising that promotes weight loss. Eating a diet rich in antioxidants can certainly help one to be healthy, but the acai berries themselves have not yet been proven to aid in weight loss alone.
Drinking Acai Fruit Juice
Since acai berries are very high in antioxidants, drinking acai fruit juice or any type of acai drink certainly couldn’t hurt. But instead of purchasing acai fruit juice in hopes of obtaining a miraculous weight loss or reducing wrinkles, people should treat it just like any other fruit juice and use it in combination with a healthy, balanced diet.
After various studies, acai berries really have no better health benefit than those of other fruits. Acai berries are still a fruit, so they do provide many of the same benefits that other fruits also provide. Consumers should be careful to not let some of the clever marketing companies sway them to buy acai fruit juice for the sole purpose of weight loss or anti-aging improvements.
