Fish oil is an excellent and well known source of vitamin A and omega-3. Omega 3 oils found in the fatty tissues of deep sea fish can help one maintain a healthy mind and body. In 1970, two Danish researchers look into the health effects of the deep-sea-fish diet of Eskimos in Greenland. First, they found out that there are only two cases of atherosclerosis in a period of four years. The researchers were delighted to know about the low rate of arthritis among the Greenland Eskimos, in spite of a pound a day of whale and seal meat diet. In addition, they observed that chronic inflammatory diseases are rare in spite of their high-cholesterol, high-fat diet.

The second New England Journal study revealed that diets enriched with oils from the fatty tissues of deep sea fish appeared to have anti-inflammatory effects. This could be the reason behind the low rate of arthritis and heart diseases among the Eskimos. In 2004, the Food and Drug Administration gave omega-3 oils the qualified “health claim” for being able to reduce the risk factors for chronic diseases. Omega-3 Oils Protect Brain from Alzheimer’s

These essential fatty acids found in fish oil is beneficial to people with Alzheimer’s disease. In the Alzheimer’s study supported by the National Institute on Aging, 900 mg of omega fat DHA was given to people who had mild memory loss. At the end of six months, people who took DHA supplements showed an increase in their mental alertness. DHA supplementation improves memory in cases of Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss that is brought by aging. (Catalan, 2002)

On the other hand, a DHA deficiency can increase stress level that can cause brain DHA depletion and low blood levels in AD patients. Thus, nutritionists have long endorsed fish as a must-have part of AD patients daily diet. Omega-3 Fats Promote Good Health

Omega-3 fatty acids are essential to the production of hormone substances that regulate a wide range of body and mind functions. EPA and DHA in omega-3 are known to reduce the risk of arthritis, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, and high blood pressure.

Omega fat DHA promotes a healthy heart. Death from heart disease among the Greenland Eskimos is only 3.5 percent of all their deaths. The second New England Journal study concluded that the high fat diet has, in some way, protected the Eskimos from heart disease. Omega fat DHA can lower blood pressure by increasing red blood cell fluidity and by regulating the level of cortisol, which is known as “the stress hormone.” DHA intake could also prevent aggression during mental stress, according to Dr. Donald Rudin in Omega-3 Oils: Practical Guide.

The human brain needs omega fat DHA. DHA is present in the membranes of the brain synapses and in the retina of the eye. However, DHA declines with aging and this may result in a declining mental function that could lead to dementia, and depression. Omega-3 Fats May Reverse Aging

Omega-3 fatty acids play a crucial role in keeping aging at bay. High levels of omega-3 fatty acids found in the blood can decrease the rate of biological aging. The omega-3 fat DHA could enhance the brain working memory function and cognitive ability that declines with aging. Omega-3 fats can also promote healing of other aging-related conditions such as anxiety, chronic fatigue syndrome, and obsessive compulsive disorder. DHA and EPA from fish oil are important for the maintenance of a healthy body and sound mind. Omega-3 DHA has been linked to the healing of depression, and memory loss. Omega EPA fish oil helps with concentration by assisting in the transmittal of messages within the tiny gaps of the brain called synapses.

How much of omega-3 does one need for a healthy mind and body? Studies on omega-3 have been carried out using fish oils of at least 65% concentrate. In some cases, clinical trials use up to 12 grams of omega-3 fatty acids per day. One of the easiest ways to ensure its therapeutic effect is to make sure that omega-3 supplements are pure and have high concentration of DHA and EPA per serving. For a healthy body and sound mind, an average person should consume five grams per day of omega-3 plus essential fatty acids from deep sea fish oil.
